11 Maury, Matthew Fontaine
(1806-1873) Мори, Мэтью ФонтейнОфицер флота и океанограф. В 1825-34 совершил три крупных плавания, в том числе кругосветное. В 1836 опубликовал первую значительную научную работу по навигации. В 1847, будучи начальником Хранилища карт и инструментов [Depot of Charts and Instruments] и директором Военно-морской обсерватории [ Naval Observatory, U.S.], опубликовал труд "Схема ветров и течений Северной Атлантики" ["Wind and Current Chart of the North Atlantic"], а в 1855 - работу "Физическая география моря и его метеорология" ["The Physical Geography of the Sea and its Meteorology"], положившую начало современной океанографии. В период Гражданской войны [ Civil War] поддерживал конфедератов [ Confederates], был представителем южан в Англии, затем жил в эмиграции в Мексике.
